SFA relief arm strikes out eight in Lumberjack debut
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The SFA baseball team got a two-run single from Jordan Monacy, but that was all the offense the 'Jacks were able to muster Saturday afternoon at Jaycees Field as Arkansas State claimed an 11-2 victory to even the season-opening series between the two squads at one game apiece.
The Red Wolves' offense came alive Saturday afternoon, amassing 11 hits and four solo homers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Arkansas State grabbed the lead for good when Drew Tipton's sac fly in the top of the second pushed Tyler Duncan home from third. Joseph Sgambelluri was charged for the run after extending the Red Wolves' frame with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
• A leadoff double for Arkansas State in the third followed by two more walks by Sgambelluri put the visitors in business again. Jaylon Deshazier padded the Red Wolves' lead with the team's second sacrifice fly and Jacob Jablonski capped the visitors' three-run frame with a two-run single.
• Sgambelluri's day was done after three frames, but the Red Wolves' bats didn't cool down when opposed by the 'Jacks' bullpen. Senior Austin Hearn surrendered a pair of RBI doubles in the visitors' fourth in addition to another sacrifice fly that pushed Arkansas State's lead to 7-0.
• Junior Jordan Monacy finally got the 'Jacks on the board in the home team's four-hit fourth. Antonio Lima and Brandon Uhse led off the frame with singles and after Josh Campbell moved them into scoring position with a productive groundout Monacy brought them home with a two-run single up the middle.
• Monacy's single was all the offense SFA produced, however. Arkansas State broke things open by belting solo homers in the sixth and eighth innings. In the top of the ninth, Eli Davis and Duncan hammered back-to-back solo shots to lead off the frame which accounted for the final margin.
KEY PERFORMERS/STATISTICS OF NOTE
• Uhse continued his hot streak at the plate to begin his collegiate career, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Lima, Monacy and Manny Vasquez each notched a hit, too, and redshirt freshman Carson Chapman notched his first collegiate hit in the ninth.
• Sgambelluri (0-1) took the loss, working his way through three innings and giving up four runs on three hits, five walks and a hit-by-pitch. The junior did manage to strike out five in his Lumberjack debut.
• Relief arm Austin Roth made his SFA debut and worked the final four innings for the 'Jacks. The sophomore right-hander struck out eighth but also gave up four solo home runs to the Red Wolves.
• Deshazier, Howard and Kyle MacDonald each finished with a pair of hits for Arkansas State who out-hit the home team 11-6. Nine different Red Wolves registered at least one RBI with Deshazier and Jablonski finishing with two each.
• Chandler Coates worked six frames to earn his first win of the season for Arkansas State. He gave up five hits and two runs while striking out six.
