Murphy Captures Southland Conference Track Athlete of the Week Honors

FRISCO, Texas – After a strong weekend in which he broke his own school record in the 800m run, senior Drake Murphy has received a weekly accolade from the Southland Conference. In a Wednesday afternoon release from the conference office, Murphy was chosen as the league's Men's Track Athlete of the Week in a league wide vote from the conference's sports information directors.
A native of Galevston, Texas, Murphy's performance at the Don Kirby Invitational over the weekend was one of the team's finest. He ran to a mark of 1:49.71 in the men's 800m run, besting his own record in the event, which he set earlier this season. The new mark was an improvement of a full second over his previous best. Murphy also made his first appearance in the men's 400m, setting the second-fastest mark in the Southland this season with a time of 47.85.
The award is the fourth athlete of the week honor for Murphy in his two seasons at SFA, and second this season.
Despite setting an SFA record in the event and posting the top time (3:40.92) in Southland Competition this season, the women's 4x400 team of Imani Nave, Cayla Burch, Dominique Jackson and Aaliyah Teel was left as an Honorable Mention in the Women's Track Athlete award voting by conference sports information directors.
