NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball team took over first place in the Southland Conference on Saturday, and will now look to continue its momentum with a midweek road contest in the Pelican State. The Ladyjacks (19-3, 10-0 SLC) will head to scenic Lake Charles to battle McNeese (5-16, 3-7 SLC) in a Wednesday evening tilt inside the newly minted H&HPE Center on the McNeese campus.
Wednesday night's game will be streamed via mcneesesports.com on a pay-per-view basis. SFA fans can tune in to a broadcast by SFA's own Bobby Mauro on FM 94.7 KVLL for a complete and detailed call of all the action. Fans are also encouraged to follow the Ladyjacks on Twitter (@SFA_WBB) for in-game updates and additional content.
Fresh off a marquee win on Saturday in a matchup between two teams unbeaten in conference play, the Ladyjacks continued their impressive winning streak and in doing so moved into sole possession of first place in the Southland Conference. Even still, the position is a tenuous one, as Lamar sits just one game back of SFA entering the week's play. Wednesday's opponent McNeese, however, sits in 10thplace in league play with a 3-7 conference record, having been picked to finish eighth in the SLC Preseason Poll.
Senior guard Chanell Hayes is coming off the best all-around game of her career in the victory over Lamar, recording a career-best 30 points on the offensive end while playing strong defense on the other end. Her current mark of 15.0 points per game is tops on the team, and along with classmate Imani johnson they form a potent 1-2 tandem through which the offense flows. The Ladyjacks offense is at its best when many players get involved moving the ball around, and with an average of 17.3 assists per game, the Ladyjacks are quite adept at doing so. The 'Jacks lead the league in field goal percentage offense AND defense as well as three-point shooting percent offense and defense, helping to create a 17.2 point margin in league play.
For McNeese, a middle of the pack scoring offense in league play (68.4 ppg) has had trouble offsetting the SLC's most porous scoring defense (78.8 ppg allowed), but the Cowgirls are better perhaps than the record suggests. Close losses to then league-leading Lamar and Incarnate Word this season are all that separate the Cowgirls from a .500 or better record and sixth place. When it comes to the strengths of the Cowgirls, rebounding is at the forefront, as McNeese ranks first in the league at 42.2 rebounds per game. Led by players such as Damilola Balogun (8.6 rpg), Divine Tanks (6.1 rpg) and Bre'Ashlee Jones (5.0 rpg), the Cowgirls are a force to be reckoned with on the glass.
A pair of guards lead the way in scoring for the Cowgirls, as Callie Maddox (14.1 ppg) has three 20+-point games this season and Regan Bolton (12.9 ppg) has connected on a league-high 63 three-pointers on a 36.6 percent clip. Head coach Kacie Cryer is in her 10th season with the team and has posted a 31-49 record in three seasons as a head coach of the Cowgirls.
