Junior generates fourth goal in the last five games to keep SFA in the hunt for a Southland Conference Tournament berth
SAN ANTONIO - Less than 48 hours removed from a gut-wrenching double-overtime setback that put a slight dent in its Southland Conference Tournament hopes, the SFA soccer team turned to Katelyn Termini to keep it in the postseason picture.
The junior midfielder broke loose late in the second overtime session at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium and fired a game-winning goal past a diving Margaret Kofron to hand the Ladyjacks a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Incarnate Word Sunday afternoon. With the win, SFA remains in a tie with Central Arkansas for eighth place in the league standings with one regular season game remaining. The top eight teams at the conclusion of the regular season make the cut for the 2019 Southland Conference Tournament.
FIRST HALF
• Much like what transpired Friday night in Abilene, SFA was held to very few scoring chances through the opening half. Termini came up with the Ladyjacks' lone shot of the frame - a strong low ball in the sixth minute - while the Cardinals had plenty of chances to strike first.
• Incarnate Word racked up 14 shots in the first 45 minutes, only two of which forced SFA backstop Madeline Talbot to make saves.
SECOND HALF
• A much more even game presented itself in the second half as the Ladyjacks' defense came out much stronger. The hosts generated six shots - two of which were on target - while the Ladyjacks came on strong through the last 20 minutes of regulation.
• All six of the visitors' second-half shots came in the last 23 minutes of the half. One of those - a rocket off of Termini's right foot - ricocheted off of the crossbar in the 81st minute and kept things scoreless.
FIRST OVERTIME
• Choosing to go to their bench, the Cardinals brought in backup goalie Kofron to start the first overtime session.
• The hosts took all four shots of the first extra frame with one of them forcing Talbot to come up with a save.
SECOND OVERTIME
• Both of the shots registered in the final overtime session came from SFA players. Down to 2:51 left, Termini split a pair of Incarnate Word defenders before sending her game-winner past Kofron.
KEY PERFORMERS/STATISTICS OF NOTE
• Outshot by a 24-9 margin, the Ladyjacks did not have to worry about most of the Cardinals' attempts as only five were on target.
• Termini's goal was her fourth in the last five games and her third game winner this month. Half of her eight goals have been scored in the month of October and five of SFA's seven wins have seen the junior put in at least one goal.
• Not only did she win the game, but Termini was the Ladyjacks' top scoring threat all afternoon in the Alamo City. The junior registered six of SFA's nine shots and put three of them on target.
• After suffering a tough-luck loss Friday night in Abilene, Texas, Talbot received credit for the shutout win. SFA's netminder stopped all five shots the Cardinals sent her way.
• Keeley Ayala took a game-high nine shots to pace Incarnate Word while Hannah Walsh finished with five (two on frame).
• With SFA and Central Arkansas tied for eighth place in the Southland standings and sporting identical 4-6 records in league play, the season finales for both teams will certainly be ones to watch as both are battling for the last spot in the league tournament.
CRITTENDEN'S COMMENTS | "What a road swing. To play two double-overtime games at Abilene Christian and at Incarnate Word is a tremendous ask of any team. This group has responded to challenges all year and have absorbed more than their share of adversity. Great players and great teams love playing in big games. No bigger game awaits than Battle of the Piney Woods and the post-season. I can't wait to watch this group play again."
COMING UP NEXT
• The third and final stop on the Ladyjacks' three-match road trip to conclude the regular season is Huntsville, Texas, as SFA prepares for a Friday night showdown at longtime Piney Woods rival Sam Houston State. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. with SFA in need of a victory to not have to worry about any tiebreaker procedures for its Southland Conference Tournament fate.
