FRISCO, Texas – A trio of 'Jacks were named Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week on Wednesday, per a midday release from the conference office. Seniors Drake Murphy, Antonio Ruiz and freshman Cayla Burch each earned their first weekly accolade of the season with the release, all after notching top performances at the Red Raider Invitational.
Murphy's stellar weekend included setting the school record in the 800m run with a time of 1:50.46. That time was far and away the top mark in the Southland Conference this season and ranks 11thnationally as well. The Galveston native's time placed him second among 37 competitors in the race.
Ruiz continues to reach new heights in the pole vault for SFA, with Saturday's mark of 5.52m (18-1.25) being a prime example. Not only was the mark a personal best for the Tomball native, but it also ranked first in the Southland Conference and fourth in the nation.
Burch earned her the first weekly accolade of her career with a first-place finish in the 600y run at the Red Raider Invitational. Her time of 1:22.96 was a school record and ranks her seventh in the nation in the event. Burch also served as a leg of the 4x400 relay team, which finished at a 3:50.60 clip marking the conference's fourth fastest time this season.
Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school's sports information director. Voting for one's own athlete is not permitted.
