NACOGDOCHES, Texas – On a day where the multi-event athletes from the Stephen F. Austin track and field team saw a slew of personal bests fall, a pair of heptathletes ended the opening day of competition within the top five and on track to beat their personal bests in the event. Sophomore Caitlin Lennon of Alba, Texas ranks third in the heptathlon with a score of 2964, while Jillian Turner is right behind in fourth with a mark of 2963.
Lennon set two new personal bests on the day, first beating her previous time in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.89, before closing out the day with a new best in the 200m dash at 25.74. Turner, meanwhile, bester her previous mark in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.35, and also had a strong effort in the 200m with a time of 25.95. Also competing in the event and currently sitting in the ninth spot is Sammi Brashears, who set new bests in the shot put (10.59m) and the 200m dash (26.49) on her way to 2701 points thus far.
In the men's decathlon, Conner Wilbur (3364) and Bradley Beaty (3245) ended the day in seventh and eighth, respectively, among collegiate performers. Wilbur broke his previous record in the 100m dash to open the day, posting a time of 11.23, while Beaty also scored well in the 100m dash by coming in with a time of 11.33. Tyji Yulee ended the opening day with a score of 3035 after scoring well in the 100m dash, while freshman Cord Neal marked new personal bests in the 100m (11.70), 400m (54.37) and long jump (6.25m) to pace his day one performance.
The meet continues in earnest tomorrow, with the multis competition setting the stage early with a 9:00 a.m return. The field events will pick up beginning at 4:00 p.m., followed by the distance carnival at 6:30 p.m. to close out the second day of competition.
