
Women’s Golf Set for 2018 Southland Conference Championship Next Week

Ladyjacks take on the eight-team league field Monday-Wednesday in the 17th edition of the Southland championship held at the Woodforest Golf Club
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – After competing in a total of 10 events throughout the fall and spring of the 2017-18 school year, the Stephen F. Austin women's golf team will head to Montgomery, Texas, for the 2018 Southland Conference Women's Golf Championship. In its 17th year of existence, the three-day league tournament will be held on the par-71, 6,191-yard course at the Woodforest Golf Club for the second consecutive season Monday-Wednesday, April 16-18.
Playing 54 holes across three rounds, the Ladyjacks will vie for a spot in the 2018 NCAA Regionals among the conference's eight women's golf teams which include Central Arkansas, Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, Lamar, McNeese, Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Tee times for Monday's opening round will begin at 8 a.m. with pairings determined by each teams' seeding, which is based off of each team's Golfstat.com national ranking.
SFA, who is seeded seventh, has been paired with No. 8 seed Incarnate Word and will tee off from hole 1 at 8 a.m. Freshman Alexis Szewczyk will tee off first for the Ladyjacks, followed by sophomore Paola Cortes at 8:09 a.m., redshirt junior Jamee Jorgensen at 8:18 a.m., sophomore Alexandra Batista at 8:27 a.m. and redshirt junior Erica Lautensack at 8:36 a.m.
Sixth-seeded McNeese is paired with No. 5 seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as the two teams will tee off at 8:45 a.m., while fourth-seeded Sam Houston State and No. 3 seed Houston Baptist will get started at 9:30 a.m. Central Arkansas is the top seed in the tournament and will tee off at 10:15 a.m. along with second-seeded Lamar.
A year ago, SFA placed fifth at the conference championship, shooting a 46-over 898 in the three rounds at the Woodforest Golf Club. The Ladyjacks' best finish at the league's championship came in 2015 when SFA finished fourth by shooting a three-day total of 53-over 917 on the par-72, 6,262-yard course at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney, Texas. That year, sophomore Jessie White captured the individual title by totaling a score of 4-over 220.
Batista was the Ladyjacks' top finisher at the 2017 Southland Women's Golf Championship, tying for sixth with a cumulative score of 7-over 220. Lautensack tied for 17th with a 13-over 226, while Cortes shot a 33-over 246 to finish 38th.
HBU is the reigning Southland women's golf champion after claiming the 2017 title by shooting a championship record 29-over 881. The Huskies snapped Lamar's streak of four consecutive Southland Women's Golf Championship titles as sophomore Lexi Brooks took home the individual crown after recording the lowest 54-hole score at the conference event with a 3-under 210.
Spanning back to the fall, SFA has competed in nine total tournaments this season and has posted five top-10 and two top-five finishes. The Ladyjacks' best showing in 2017-18 came at the Sam Houston State Bearkat Invitational during the first week of October where SFA placed third among 11 teams with a season-low 58-over 910. At the nation's largest collegiate golf tournament, the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic in Kiawah Island, South Carolina (Feb. 25-27), the Ladyjacks had their best performance. SFA tied for 28th among 43 total teams and shot a three-round score of 61-over 925, including recording a season-low tying 10-over 298 in the second round.
Lautensack leads the Ladyjacks this season with a 77.22 scoring average through 27 rounds of golf, while Batista has averaged a 77.44 per round. The two have combined for seven of SFA's 11 total top-20 individual finishes in 2017-18, including three top-10 placements by Lautensack and one top-10 showing by Batista.
