Complete All-Southland Conference Release
FRISCO, Texas - Monday afternoon, the Southland Conference unveiled its list of All-Conference teams and a total of four Stephen F. Austin men's basketball players claimed all-league recognition.
Junior Shannon Bogues and sophomore Kevon Harris were named to the All-Southland Conference Second Team while junior TJ Holyfield and sophomore Aaron Augustin were part of the six-man Southland Conference All-Defensive Team. Holyfield also earned a spot on the All-Southland Conference Third Team.
The only underclassman to appear on either the All-Southland Conference First or Second Team lists, Harris emerged as one of the 'Jacks' best players in his second season as a collegian. Hailing from Ellenwood, Ga., the dangerous guard/forward put his penchant for offense on display right out of the gates by delivering his first of eight 20-point performances as part of a double-double effort in the 'Jacks' season opening win at Longwood.
Those eight games of 20 or more represented the sixth-highest total among all Southland Conference players and the sophomore was particularly effective from three-point range. For the regular season, Harris drilled 43.3-percent (52-of-120) of his three-pointers - a percentage bettered by just one player in the league.
The winner of the league's first and third Player of the Week awards of the season, Harris totaled a trio of double-double throughout the regular season and delivered the league's best single-game field goal percentage this season by going 10-of-11 (90.9-percent) en route to a 25-point finish in SFA's non-conference victory at Louisiana Tech. Against non-conference foe Rice in December, Harris put on a three-point shooting show that few in SFA history have duplicated by hitting eight triples - the third-most in a single game in program history - to finish with a career-high 31 points.
Instant offense are perhaps the best two words to describe Bogues, a junior out of Killeen, Texas. During his debut season in an SFA uniform, it was abundantly clear that the former junior college All-American brought his high-scoring ways with him to Nacogdoches. The 'Jacks' leading scorer at 15.5 points per game - a figure which was also the seventh-highest among all Southland Conference players - Bogues delivered four 30 point performances through the regular season.
That total was second only to Southland Conference Player of the Year Jordan Howard (Central Arkansas) and when taking league games only into account Bogues' numbers were even better. Against Southland foes, Bogues delivered 16.6 points per game on the strength of a field goal percentage of .520 - the 14th-highest in the league.
Against Northwestern State on Feb. 10, Bogues single-handedly totaled 70-percent of the Demons' point total in SFA's 97-50 win by amassing 35 points on a Southland Conference-best 13 field goal makes. Two of the league's top six single-game field goal percentage showings have come courtesy of Bogues, too, who went 9-of-11 (81.8-percent) in 'Jack wins over Sam Houston State (82-66 on Jan. 27) and at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (87-68 on Feb. 14).
Now established as one of a select few in the history of program who have netted 1,000 points and grabbed 500 rebounds in their careers, Holyfield's second All-Southland Conference selection of his career came in a season where he served as the 'Jacks' third-leading scorer (12.9 points per game).
The junior led the 'Jacks and ranked fourth in the Southland Conference with a field goal percentage of .556 (148-of-266) while serving as the team's best rebounder. Holyfield's 6.2 rebounds per game represent the 10th-highest average in the Southland Conference and both of his double-double efforts came against league opposition.
Holyfield grabbed his 500th career rebound at Central Arkansas on Jan. 24 before becoming the 29th player in program history to register 1,000 points in SFA's home win over Central Arkansas on Feb. 21.
From beyond the arc, few were as lethal as Bogues who finished with a shooting clip of 47.3-percent from there in league tilts. That represented the second-highest percentage in the conference and the junior's three 30-point games against league foes were the second-most in the conference. Appearing predominantly off the bench, Bogues boasts the nation's second-leading scoring average by a bench player.
One of the lynchpins for a defense that is one of the best in the nation, Augustin became one of only six underclassmen in league history to earn a spot on the Southland Conference All-Defensive Team with his selection to the six-man group. A product of Suwanee, Ga., Augustin's aggressive defensive style caused fits for numerous foes both in the Southland and around the nation.
The second-year man's 51 steals were the seventh-most among Southland Conference players and added to SFA's nation-leading total of 327. That theft total represents a new single-season SFA high and as a result have helped the 'Jacks lead all of NCAA Division I basketball in turnovers forced per game. SFA's defense forces 20.39 opponent throwaways per outing, many of those coming due to Augustin and company's haranguing defense.
As well as his spot on the All-Southland Conference Third Team, Holyfield joined Augustin and four others from around the league on the All-Defensive Team. Just 10 blocked shots separate the Albuquerque, N.M., product from becoming SFA's all-time leader in rejections and his 35 so far this season are the 11th-most in a single season in program history.
Currently Holyfield ranks 11th in the Southland with an average of 1.1 rejections per game while his four defensive rebounds per game rank 15th in the league.
Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas, the 'Jacks embark on a quest for their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last five seasons when they open play in the Southland Conference Tournament. SFA, who is the third seed for the league's postseason tournament, is set to face off against the winner of sixth-seeded Lamar and seventh-seeded Central Arkansas in the quarterfinal round.
