Lumberjack Football Opens up Spring Practice under the Lights

SFA hosts its first spring football practice under the lights inside Homer Bryce Stadium Monday night
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Spring football has begun in Texas' oldest town. The lights of Homer Bryce Stadium shown bright Monday night as the Stephen F. Austin football team took to the turf for its first practice of the spring season. Sporting jerseys and helmets, the Lumberjacks got their first taste of spring ball to open up the three-and-a-half-week, 15-session period that will culminate with SFA's annual Purple and White Spring Game Saturday, April 21.
The 'Jacks hosted a 21-segment session that last about an hour and 45 minutes for their first of 15 total spring football practice dates, focusing on the fundamentals of the game. Starting and ending with stretches, SFA participated in both positional drills and 11-on-11 snaps.
Already off to preparing for their 2018 quest, the 'Jacks will host two more practices this week, Tuesday, March 27 and Wednesday, March 28, before taking the following four days off for Easter break this weekend. Both remaining practices this week will get started at 3:50 p.m. from inside Homer Bryce Stadium.
SFA will host two scrimmages this spring to highlight the 14 practice sessions leading up to the annual spring game. The first scrimmage is set for Saturday, April 7 at 2 p.m. and will take place at Nacogdoches High School. The opening scrimmage continues SFA's east Texas stops as the 'Jacks have held a spring scrimmage at Lufkin High School, Longview High School, Marshall High School and Carthage High School in years past. The second scrimmage of the spring will take place on Saturday, April 14 at 2 p.m. and will be held inside Homer Bryce.
The Lumberjacks' 2018 spring football game is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Homer Bryce on Saturday, April 21.
Monday practices will start at 7:30 p.m. and will be held under the lights, while practices on all other weekdays will begin at 3:50 p.m.

The 'Jacks return a total of 23 starters from last season, including 11 with starting experience on the offensive side of the ball, nine on defense and three specialists. A total of 45 letter winners return for SFA's 2018 campaign, including four 2017 All-Southland Conference Second Team selections. The 'Jacks will also have 36 newcomers on its squad come this fall, including 14 who are already with the team this spring.
For the second consecutive season the 'Jacks are set to take on six teams from the Lone Star State this fall. Eight of SFA's 11 games in 2018 will be played on Texas soil, five of which will be held at Homer Bryce Stadium. The Lumberjacks' season will begin on Saturday, Sept. 1 when SFA heads to Starkville, Mississippi, to take on Southeastern Conference stalwart Mississippi State. The 'Jacks will host NCAA Division II Tarleton State for their home opener Saturday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m.
Tickets for the 2018 football season go on sale Monday, April 2.
