SFA pushes regular season win streak to 14 games, Carthel matches SFA career wins mark

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – #8/12 Stephen F. Austin picked up its third road win in four weeks on Saturday night inside Panther Stadium at Blackshear Field as the Jacks cruised past defending SWAC champ Prairie View A&M 31-10 to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Jaydon Eason registered three sacks including two in back-to-back snaps to push Prairie View out of field goal range late in the third quarter and on the next SFA possession, Gavin Rutherford hit Bugs Mortimer for 42 yards to set up Speedy Jones' 21-yard jet to the pylon for the fourth and final touchdown of the night.

Three Rutherford touchdown passes to three different targets, along with a 48-yard field goal from Carlos Alvarado, sent the visiting Jacks into the intermission with a three-possession advantage at 24-0.

Rutherford found a wide-open Gerard Edimo over the middle from 15 yards out for the game's first score and hit Cameron Kelley from 15 yards out along the far corner for a second first quarter strike. Alvarado punched in a 48-yard attempt to push the lead to three possessions and Rutherford lobbed one up to where only Bugs Mortimer could haul it in and the latter did with less than two minutes to play before the break to cap off the first half.

Lowote Jurkin delivered a punishing sack of PV quarterback Tevin Carter to end the Panthers' hopes of finding the endzone in the first half as a final play heave to the endzone was broken up after PV elected to run the clock down for one final play following Jurkin's crushing effort. Earlier in the first half, Makai Frisby blocked a PV field goal attempt from the far hash from 47 yards away to keep the Panthers off the board on a drive that started at the SFA33.

SFA held PV to 96 first half yards and to just 2.6 yards per rushing attempt. Over a third of those yards came via the final drive of the half that resulted in the Panthers moving the football inside the SFA40 for just the second time in the opening thirty minutes.

A second SFA turnover of the night led to the PV's first points; however, the Jacks held the host out of the endzone by forcing a 37-yard attempt. Kyran Moore chased down Carter and Jaiydyn Johnson broke up a third-down pass attempt to force the Panthers' second FGA of the night.

All four touchdown scoring drives took six plays or less, covered 70 or more yards and took less than two and a half minutes to hit paydirt
The Jacks held PV to just 81 yards rushing at 1.8 per carry; the third-straight game with an opponent held under 85 total rushing yards
Eason became the first Jack in 11 seasons to record three sacks in a game with the last instance coming in a three-sack effort by John Franklin on September 10, 2016, against West Alabama
Rutherford's three TD passes gives him 30 total touchdowns for his career
Malachi Williams led ten other Jack defenders with 4+ tackles as he collected seven
Emmanuel Harris collected five tackles with half of those going for losses
The Jacks broke up nine passes with Johnson leading with a pair
SFA recorded 10 TFL for the second-straight game and has reached nine three times in four games
Jones led the rushing attack, which eclipsed 200 yards for the third time this season, with a dozen carries for 77 yards and a long of 21 which put him in the end zone for the Jacks' fourth touchdown of the night
Preston Alford averaged 16.3 yards per carry with a long of 32
Mortimer finished with 73 yards receiving on six catches with a long of 46
Wayland paced with 85 yards receiving on just two catches including a long of 45
Rutherford was highly efficient in completing 72% of his 25 attempts for 213 yards and three TDs

The victory pushes SFA's regular season winning streak to 14 games
SFA is off to the program's first 4-0 start to a season since the 2004 campaign and the first 4-0 start against DI opposition ever
