Seven-team tournament field awaits SFA in third annual event at the Trophy Club Country Club in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Three weeks removed from its last tournament, the Stephen F. Austin women's golf team returns to competition this week as the Ladyjacks co-host the third annual ORU/SFA Spring Break Invitational at the Trophy Club Country Club in Trophy Club, Texas. A total of eight teams, including a seven-team tournament field, will converge on the par-72, 6,200-yard golf course Monday-Wednesday, March 19-21, for the three-day, 54-hole event hosted by both Oral Roberts University and SFA.
The lone Southland Conference representative at the 2018 version of the tournament, the Ladyjacks will be joined by Bowling Green, Creighton, Florida Atlantic, Northern Iowa, co-host Oral Roberts and UT Arlington. The Big 12 Conference's Baylor will also have individuals competing in Trophy Club this week.
The ORU/SFA Spring Break Invitational will feature single tee starts off of hole No. 1 beginning at 8:30 a.m. for each day's round of play.
SFA will be one of the final teams to tee off for Monday's opening round as the Ladyjacks have been paired with Creighton and players from Oral Roberts and Northern Iowa. Freshman Alexis Szewczyk (McKinney, Texas) will get things started for SFA with a 10:10 a.m. tee time, followed by sophomore Paola Cortes (Allen, Texas) and senior individual competitor Zoey Daneshfar (Trophy Club, Texas) teeing off at 10:20 a.m. Redshirt junior Jamee Jorgensen (Boerne, Texas) and freshman individual competitor Kelly Yang (Sugar Land, Texas) will both tee off at 10:30 a.m., while redshirt junior Erica Lautensack (Arlington, Texas) will get started at 10:40 a.m. and sophomore Alexandra Batista (Trophy Club, Texas) at 10:50 a.m.
The Ladyjacks are coming off of a strong showing at the nation's largest collegiate golf tournament, the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic held the last week of February, where SFA tied for 28th among a 43-team field. Despite finishing 61-over 925 after a less desirable third round, the Ladyjacks tied their lowest single round of the season by shooting a 10-over 298 in round two, which tied the fifth-best round shot by SFA in program history. With a 13-over 301 in the opening round of the event, the Ladyjacks held a season-low total through the first 36 holes of play at 23-over 599.
Batista led SFA at the tournament by tying for 32nd among 218 total golfers with a three-round score of 7-over 223. Most impressively, she shot career-best 3-under 69 in the first round to sit tied atop the individual leaderboard, tying the third-lowest individual round in school history and becoming just the fourth Ladyjack golfer to register a score of 69 or better in any round.
A year ago, SFA placed 10th out of 16 teams at the 2017 ORU/SFA Spring Break Invitational with a three-round score of 82-over 946 after finishing 17th among 20 teams at the 2016 version of the event. Batista led the Ladyjacks at last season's ORU/SFA Spring Break Invitational by tying for 30th with a final tally of 18-over 234, while Lautensack placed 65th with a 28-over 244 and Cortes 70th with a 31-over 247.
Houston Baptist claimed the ORU/SFA Spring Break Invitational title in 2016 after shooting a 51-over 891 on the then par-70 course. Last year's team champion was Eastern Kentucky, who totaled a three-round score of 31-over 895 and had two golfers tie for the individual crown. Sofie Levin and Amanda Lindahl both shot a 2-over 218 to finish atop of the individual standings in 2017, while Houston Baptist's Giorgia Carletti and Little Rock's Shania Berger both shot a tournament record 6-over 216 in 2016. Carletti took home the 2016 ORU/SFA Spring Break Invitational individual title after outlasting Berger in a single-hole playoff.
