KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For a seventh-straight season, a Stephen F. Austin men's basketball player was listed among the 10 student-athletes who made up the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I All-District 23 Teams. Late Tuesday, it was junior guard Shannon Bogues who was chosen for the NABC's All-District 23 Second Team.
Already an All-Southland Conference Second Team choice as well as one of two SFA representatives on the Southland Conference All-Tournament team as a result his exemplary efforts in helping direct the 'Jacks to their fourth NCAA Tournament in the past five seasons last weekend, the high-scoring product of Killeen, Texas, immediately became an oft-referenced individual on scouting reports of SFA's foes.
The team's leading scorer and the seventh-best scorer among all Southland Conference players, Bogues has put in points at a clip of 15.4 per game. That high scoring rate is aided by the junior's accuracy from both the field - where Bogues converts 50.9-percent of his tries - and from the foul line where he ranks sixth in the Southland with a free throw percentage of .807.
Throughout his debut season in Nacogdoches, Bogues has put in 30 or more points on four occasions. That total was exceeded by just one man - Central Arkansas guard Jordan Howard who was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year.
Two of the league's top six single-game field goal percentage showings have come courtesy of Bogues, too, who went 9-of-11 (81.8-percent) in 'Jack wins over Sam Houston State (82-66 on Jan. 27) and at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (87-68 on Feb. 14).
In all, Bogues has amassed 525 points so far this season, making him one of only nine players in SFA's NCAA Division I history to score 500 or more points in a single season. That total ranks as the fifth-highest in a single season in SFA's DI program history.
Thursday night inside American Airlines Center in Dallas, Bogues and the rest of the 'Jacks will start their run in the 2018 NCAA Tournament as a 14-seed. SFA is set to face off against in-state rival and third-seeded Texas Tech at 6:27 p.m. on truTV. The NCAA Tournament appearance is the fourth in the past five seasons for SFA.
