NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Junior pole vaulter Antonio Ruiz of the Stephen F. Austin track and field team has been named a USTFCCCA All-American Second Team selection in the wake of his 12th place finish in the men's pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Championships over the weekend, per a release from the national office on Monday. The honor is the first of Ruiz's career, having earned Honorable Mention honors last season, and makes him one of two Southland Conference student-athletes to earn All-American accolades from the indoor meet.
Ruiz secured a 12th place finish at the indoor championships after being initially seeded to finish 16th in the event. Ruiz cleared a mark of 5.40m (17'-8.50") on the day, and just narrowly missed out on clearing a height of 5.50m (18'-0.5"). Antonio had qualified for the NCAA Championship with that height at the Southland Conference Championships two weeks prior, where he placed first in the event.
Next up for Ruiz and the rest of the 'Jacks is the 2018 outdoor season, which kicks off this weekend as the team competes at the TCU Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas.
