SFA claims three singles win in Thibodaux
THIBODAUX, La. - Try as they might to reverse its fortunes through a season-long funk, the Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team came close to registering its first victory of 2018 but Nicholls had other ideas and denied SFA victory by claiming a 4-3 win at the Colonel Tennis Complex Saturday afternoon.
The loss - SFA's 15th in a row dating back to the 2017 season - pushes the Ladyjacks' record down to 0-10 and 0-3 in Southland Conference play and occurred despite the best efforts of Darinka Tiboldi, Kaja Ljubic and Nida Kamal who each emerged as the victors in their singles matches.
Nicholls claimed an early lead after the tandems of Tiboldi and Kamal and Siân Payne and Gabi Guilarte suffered identical 6-1 setbacks at the first and second doubles flights respectively.
Once singles play got going, Vera Carvalho fell 6-1, 6-2 to Anna Kuzevanova in the number-six flight before Payne was ousted 6-4, 6-0 by Stephanie Barnett on the top singles line.
In the number-three singles flight, Armelle Cerdan found herself in quite the battle with Mariia Kozachok only to fall 6-2, 6-7 (10-8), 7-5. That win sealed the match for the Colonels, too.
Tiboldi battled back from a 6-2 setback to Ling Gu in the opening set of the number-two singles match and claimed a three-set victory by winning the remaining two sets by 6-2 scores.
On the number-five line, Kamal handled Changwei Wei 6-3, 6-3 and Ljubic won her third-straight singles match by defeating Marina Vigil 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 in the number four slot.
SFA closes out its two-match weekend in Louisiana Sunday afternoon when the Ladyjacks take on McNeese in Lake Charles. The Southland Conference match is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
