
Third-Ranked Ole Miss too Much for Ladyjacks in 4-0 Loss

Cerdan and Carvalho claim 3-2 lead in number three doubles flight
OXFORD, Miss. - Matched up against one of the nation's top squads, the Stephen F. Austin tennis team gave third-ranked Ole Miss a fight but fell 4-0 to the Rebels Saturday afternoon at the Ole Miss Indoor Tennis Center.
"We came in today with the mindset to fight for every point and make Ole Miss earn the win," head coach Jon McLaughlin commented after the match. "I thought we did an excellent job of that and came away from this match a better team. Probably our best team performance of the year so far."
Armelle Cerdan and Vera Carvalho grabbed a 3-2 lead over the Rebels' tandem of Allie Sanford and Tereza Janatova in the number-three double flights, but their bid for a win was cut short after Ole Miss captures wins in the first (6-1) and second (6-2) flight to take a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth singles slot, Cerdan took three games again Anna Vrbenska in the opening set but Vrbenska won the flight 6-3, 6-0, upping the Rebels' edge to 2-0. Matched up against the nation's 115th-best player in Sabina Machalova, Darinka Tiboldi won a total of three games in her 6-2, 6-1 setback on the number-three singles line.
Ole Miss clinched the match when 16th-ranked Arienne Hartono claimed a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Siân Payne in the number-one flight. Following that, none of the remaining three singles matches that were still going on were allowed to continue since the Rebels had already secured the team victory.
When the match was called, Gabi Guilarte had battled Natalie Suk to a 6-3, 4-3 score with the second set still up for grabs. Sanford was up 6-1, 4-2 on Kaja Ljubic in the sixth singles flight while Janatova held a 6-4, 3-1 advantage over Nida Kamal on the fifth line.
SFA concludes its two-match road trip Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. by taking on Memphis.
