BEAUMONT, Texas – The latest installment in a long and storied history for SFA Soccer in the Southland Conference Tournament will take place on Sunday when the Ladyjacks face off with fifth-seeded Abilene Christian in the title game. SFA's long and storied history in the tournament is evident both in a league-high 20 appearances in the tournament, as well as an SLC-best 15 straight appearances. With Sunday being the third straight tournament title game SFA has played in in as many seasons, the stakes are high entering the matinee contest.
The game will be shown on ESPN+ , and can also be viewed on ESPNPlus.com and ESPN apps. Live stats are available via the link above as well, and fans are encouraged to follow SFA Soccer and SFA Athletics on all Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for content before, during and after the contest.
For the Ladyjacks, a determined run to close out the season has seen them win four of their last five, including upset victories over the second and third seeded teams in the opening rounds of the Southland Conference Tournament. During that span, the Ladyjacks have been sharp on both sides of the ball, outscoring opponents 10-3. That stretch included a double-overtime loss to ACU back on October 21, a game in which an injury-depleted Ladyjack lineup held the Wildcats scoreless for 102 minutes before conceding a late golden goal.
That goal came off the foot of Christina Arteaga, the 2017 Freshman of the Year for the Southland Conference and ACU's leading scorer in the 2018 campaign, with eight goals and four assists. ACU's road to the title game included a 3-1 victory over fourth-seeded McNeese and a tight 1-0 victory over top seed Central Arkansas on Friday afternoon. It's defense that the Wildcats hang their hats on, however, as they have conceded just 10 goals on the season.
Putting that mark to the test will be a talented and multi-faceted attack from SFA, which has been led in points by sophomore midfielders Sophia Fondren and Katelyn Termini with 11 and 10 points respectively. Other key contributors for the Ladyjacks on the attacking end have been Breanna Moore, the team's lone senior, as well as Caylon McMillan and Katie Jennings. That group has been creating dangerous chances all over the field for SFA in the tournament thus far.
Defensively, the Ladyjacks have tightened things up in the final third of the season, allowing two goals in regulation in their past five games, registering a pair of shutouts and holding four of those opponents under 10 total shots. Left back Carli Arthurs had her head in the game on Friday, quite literally, as her late header was the difference maker in SFA's 2-1 victory over Lamar.
TERMINI CALLS GAME
Sophomore KATELYN TERMINI netted the game-winner in Wednesday night's quarterfinal win against HBU in the 88th minute, and all three of her goals this season are game-winning tallies.
ARTHURS FOR THE WIN!
Junior CARLI ARTHURS netted the game-winner in Friday night's semifinal win over Lamar, rising up to head a corner kick service into the net in the 83rd minute of play.
SAVE A SPOT FOR US
The Ladyjacks ventured into the 2018 Southland Conference Tournament as the seventh seed, marking the 15th straight tournament appearance for the team and 20thoverall.
WE'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE
The Ladyjacks' run in the 2018 tournament should come as no surprise, as the 'Jacks have competed for five of the last six tournament titles, have qualified for 15 straight tournaments, and are tied for the most SLC tournament wins of any team in the league.
SHUTDOWN DEFENSE
Coming into Friday's semifinal matchup, Lamar had tallied an impressive 40+ goals on the season. SFA's defense shut down the Cardinal attack, limiting them to just one goal on eight shots.
LOW SEEDS, HIGH QUALITY
SFA and title game opponent Abilene Christian combine to form the highest combined seeds (12) of any Southland Conference title game matchup, eclipsing the previous high of 11 set in the 2006 title game.
