Senior catcher an automatic selection to the preseason all-conference first team after receiving second-team accolades last spring
FRISCO, Texas – Stephen F. Austin senior catcher Amber Landry has been placed on the preseason All-Southland Conference First Team, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon with the release of its preseason all-conference picks. Landry, an All-Southland Second Team performer in 2017, gained the automatic selection as the preseason teams were selected by a vote of the league's head coaches. Each All-Southland honoree from 2017 was placed on the preseason all-conference teams with the remaining spots filled by coaches' selections.
SFA's top returning hitter from last season, Landry owned a .290 batting average in 145 at bats in 2017. Primarily catching and playing third base, the Ponchatoula, Louisiana (Ponchatoula H.S.), native registered 42 hits on the season, including 14 going for extra bases and five home runs. Landry delivered 17 RBI and owned a slugging percentage of .462, collecting 67 total bases with an on-base percentage of .344. Behind the plate and in the infield, Landry claimed 146 putouts and made 45 assists. One of the top catchers in the conference, she caught 12 base runners stealing for the fourth-most in the Southland.
Majoring in kinesiology, Landry claimed National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2016-17 academic year. She was also named to the 2017 spring semester's Southland Commissioner's Honor Roll and is a regular on the SFA Dean's List.
Prior to arriving in Nacogdoches, Landry was a standout All-American catcher at Tyler Junior College.
McNeese, Nicholls and Abilene Christian lead the preseason All-Southland teams with five selections each. The Cowgirls have the most first-team picks with four, while the Colonels and Wildcats each have three. Abilene Christian had the most players voted onto the two teams with three as McNeese and Lamar each have a pair of non-automatic selections.
The Ladyjacks begin their 2018 campaign in a little over a week when they travel to Monroe, Louisiana, for Louisiana-Monroe's Mardi Gras Classic held Friday-Sunday, Feb. 9-11, at the ULM Softball Complex. SFA opens up the season by taking on UT Martin Friday, Feb. 9, at 8 a.m., followed by Chattanooga at 10 a.m.
A total of 11 newcomers, including five true freshmen and six transfers, join 10 total letter winners from a year ago to make up this year's squad as head coach Nicole Dickson enters her second year at the helm.
