LUBBOCK, Texas -- Some strong individual performances by members of the Stephen F. Austin track and field team carried the day at the Texas Tech Multis Invitational on Friday, as the women's pentathlon wrapped up and the men's heptathlon closed out the first of two days of competition. The men's multis will finish the remaining events of the heptathlon (60m hurdles, pole vault, 1000m) tomorrow morning.
Hunter Key is in fifth place after the opening day of the heptathlon, accruing 2727 points across four events while putting forth strong performances in the 60m dash (7.18) and the shot put (12.41m). Teammate Conner Wilbur came in 11th after the opening day with a score of 2654, anchored by a strong effort in the high jump (1.86m). Daniel Rosado also had a strong high jump effort (1.92m), and came in 13th with a mark of 2520. Rounding out the men's scores were Tyji Yulee (2473) and Bradley Beaty (2443).
"Hunter had a bit of a hiccup in the long jump, but the rest of his day was good," said SFA multis coach Ron McCown. "Conner Wilbur had a good day, and our freshman Daniel Rosado did well in the high jump. I'm looking for a strong Day Two from all of these guys."
In the pentathlon, the duo of Jillian Turner and Caitlin Lennon led the way for SFA, as Turner placed ninth with a score of 3335 and Lennon came in 11th at 3237. Turner's mark came in just below a personal best, and her efforts in the high jump (1.54m) and long jump (5.12m) were her best marks. Teammate Sammi Brashears set a new PR at the event with a total of 3192. Avery Ellis-Byerly, competing in her first pentathlon for SFA, finished with a mark of 3049, with her best performance coming in the shot put (12.07m).
Today was a okay opener for us," continued McCown. "Now we just have to get back to work and get ourselves ready for the conference meet."
The day's events included performances from unattached athletes, and all rankings and placements are solely based on the collegiate performers.
