Full Southland Conference Release
FRISCO, Texas -- The second Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors represented a sweep for Stephen F. Austin on the men's side, per a release from the conference office on Wednesday. Drake Murphy claimed the weekly honor for Track Athlete of the Week, while Antonio Ruiz claimed Field Athlete of the Week. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school's sports information director. Voting for one's own athlete is not permitted.
Murphy, a junior from Galveston, Texas, brought home his first weekly accolade after posting SFA's top individual finish at the Texas Tech Red Raider Invitational. Murphy won the 800m race with a time of 1:55.37, beating out 13 competitors and posting the second best time in the event among Southland runners this season. Murphy also anchored SFA's 4x400 relay, which took fifth at the event.
Ruiz kept up his strong start to the indoor season by tying his previous season high of 5.22m in the pole vault (17' 1.5") and finishing second in the event. His mark on Friday was the best mark of any athlete in the Southland this week.
SFA will next compete in the New Mexico Classic and Multis on February 2-3 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Allyson Girard and McNeese's Alanna Arvie were named the Southland Conference Women's Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, in a corresponding release.
