COLLEGE STATION, Texas – In its first action of the 2017-18 indoor season, the Stephen F. Austin track and field team competed at the Ted Nelson Invitational hosted by Texas A&M in College Station on Saturday. The 'Jacks competed in a field that included Power Five schools such as Clemson and host Texas A&M, as well as Army and several mid-major schools.
"I thought we competed well, we know what we need to work on and get ready for our next time out," said SFA Track and field assistant coach Ron McCown. "We have a fairly young team in several events, so just having a chance to compete and get a meet under our belts is something to be happy about."
On the men's side, a pair of strong performances in the 60m hurdles from Kerry Gleason (8.18) and Jordan Washington (8.28) qualified both for the finals of the event. Gleason also ran a leg of the men's 4x400 relay that placed second (3:12:30) for SFA, and included Tedrick Hawkins, Payton Davis and Drake Murphy as well. Davis, a freshman, also placed sixth in the 400m (48.26) with a time that is currently the best mark in the Southland Conference.
In the long jump, Isaiah Pittman (7.30m) and Denzel Green (7.08m) finished second and fifth, respectively. Pacing the team in the 60 meter dash were Khalil Lacey (6.89) and Aaron Piper (6.86), who finished second and fifth, respectively, to qualify for the finals.
Chad Horstmann was a fourth-place (4.72m) finisher on the men's side in the pole vault, while Noah Berney (2.08m) placed second in the high jump. Kevin Steward finished fifth in the shot put (15.58m), while Trenton Bridges placed sixth in the weight throw (16.90m). The men's distance medley relay team of Erick Rotich, Drake Murphy, Gleason and Larry Deramus finished fourth with a time of 10:13:91.
On the women's side, Imani Nave had a strong day of competition, finishing sixth in the 200m with a time of 24.40, a mark that puts her atop the Southland Conference. Nave also led off the mile relay for the women, which placed fourth overall (3:48:24) and also included legs from Tiffany Williams, Dominique Jackson and Deziree Porter.
