FRISCO, Texas - With less than two months remaining before the 2017-18 college basketball season begins, media personnel from around the state and region will have the opportunity to meet with Stephen F. Austin head men's and women's basketball coaches Kyle Keller and Mark Kellogg at the Southland Conference Basketball Media Day which has been set for Monday, Oct. 16 from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
The announcement for the league's basketball media day came via press release issued Wednesday. Things are set to get going at 9:00 a.m. with remarks from Southland Conference Commissioner Tom Burnett. From there, each men's and women's basketball coach from the Southland Conference's 13 member institutions will be in attendance and will take the podium in 25-minute increments beginning at 9:15 a.m. Results of the coaches' and SID's predicted order of finish for the conference will also be unveiled during the event.
Keller and Kellogg will step up to the podium from 12:10 p.m. until 12:35 p.m. to field questions from various media members.
On the men's side, Keller enters his second season in charge of the 'Jacks and posted an 18-15 record and a runner-up showing in the Southland Conference during his inaugural season. In the postseason, the 'Jacks made it to the semifinal round of the Southland Conference Tournament and secured a spot in the CIT. It was the fifth-straight season in which the program qualified for postseason play. Keller's 18 wins were the eighth-most among all first-year NCAA Division I head coaches and armed with the nation's 74th-best recruiting class along with almost two-thirds of their scorers from a season ago he hopes to lead SFA back to the top of the league standings in 2017-18.
Kellogg sets out on his third season at the helm of one of the most storied women's basketball programs in the nation after a 2017-18 campaign in which he prepped the Southland Conference Player of the Year (Taylor Ross) and led his squad all the way to the Southland Conference Tournament finals. One season ago, the Ladyjacks rolled up a 25-8 record - the team's first season of 25 or more wins since 2000-01 and a seven-win improvement from the previous campaign - and qualified for a spot in the WBI.
Activities for the day include media availability for each coach, including time for one-on-one interviews, Southland television broadcasters Tatum Everett and Lincoln Rose sitting down for Q&As with each coach in the Houston Rockets' visitors' locker room as part of a comprehensive preview of each team for a show that will stream on ESPN3 at 6 p.m. It will be available on-demand immediately follows its initial showing, all 26 coaches participating in interactive social media activities, which fans can follow on the Southland Conference Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. The social media undertakings will be followed by a unique session with Southland television analyst and basketball Hall-of-Famer Van Chancellor.
