NACOGDOCHES, Texas – After opening the 2017 season with a pair of long road trips, the Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team returns to the friendly confines of Nacogdoches for a match against Texas State on Sunday to open the home season. Only the Ladyjacks won't be playing at the SFA Soccer Field, where they have accrued a 34-5-1 record over the past five seasons, as a week of consistent rainfall has left the field in less than ideal conditions. Instead, SFA will host Texas State at Nacogdoches High School, on a turf field, in what will be the third matchup with the Bobcats in as many years.
Texas State is 0-2-1 so far in the 2017 campaign, with a winless streak of eight matches that dates back to last season. The Bobcats dropped a 2-0 decision to Northern Arizona in the season opener, drew with Louisiana Tech and then lost a 2-1 decision to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, another Southland Conference opponent. Bobcats head coach Kat Conner is in her 19th season at the helm of Texas State, and has led them to four regular season titles, five conference tournament championships and five NCAA Tournament Appearances.
Returning for the Bobcats is a group of 15 players, which includes five sophomores and three juniors. On the defensive backline, Chandler Cooney and Genesis Turman both return after starting all 18 matches last season, while nine-point scorer Kassi Hormuth returns after tying for the team lead in points last season. A trio of veteran midfielders in Rachel Grout, Brooke Ramsey and Kira Zapalac make the midfielder group the most experienced group of any for the Bobcats. In goal, the Bobcats turned to sophomore Heather Martin, where she made 15 starts and accrued a 1.10 goals against average with a 79.2 save percentage.
"One of the reasons we play Texas State every year is because it's a fantastic game", said SFA head coach Wally Crittenden. "They're in a position to do well in their league, we're in a position to do well in ours, and I have tremendous respect for that coaching staff and the players they have. They've kind of been up and down a little bit, but I can tell you it's going to be a physical game, it's a game that is going to feature some really great soccer players. Whoever establishes themselves first in possession has the best chance to win this game."
The Ladyjacks come into the weekend match with a 1-2 record, having earned their first win of the season in a comeback effort against UTSA. Prior to that, the Ladyjacks had been in a winnable game with Mississippi State, and had been in charge before faltering late in a loss to Southern Miss. After being shut out by the Bulldogs in the opener, the Ladyjacks have scored four goals through two games, and seem to be finding their stride offensively.
"On the offensive end, we scored two goals on the road in back to back matches, and those came against good opponents", Crittenden said. "I've been pleased with our output, but you want to continue to grow, want to continue to build and take more shots, really establish our rhythm. What we saw at UTSA was an overall commitment to appreciating the grind and physical commitment to finishing a good team, home or away. Also I coming back from a goal down to win, that's a good early experience for our team moving forward."
SFA's first win of the season came on the heels of a superb single-game effort from midfielder Hanna Barker. After falling behind 1-0 to the Roadrunners before the halftime break, the Ladyjacks got the equalizing goal off the foot of Barker just two minutes into the second half. Later, Barker's penetrating run down the left side of the field and a crisp pass into the box set up freshman Katelyn Termini for the go-ahead strike in the 79th minute.
Originally scheduled to play a home opener on Friday against Texas Southern, Stephen F. Austin saw that match get canceled due to the effects of Hurricane Harvey, which made travel for the Texas Southern squad nearly impossible. Instead, the home opener will be played at the local high school, and on a turf field, which lends itself to faster play.
"Initially your gut instinct is some disappointment because our kids were looking forward to playing at home, but then you think about why you're not playing on your home field, and you recognize what other teams and people are going through right now, and how fortunate we are to be able to think about getting a game in", Crittenden explains. "It's a testament to the ability of athletics to bring people together and help renew spirits."
After Sunday's match with the Bobcats, the Ladyjacks will hit the road for matchups at New Mexico State and UTEP on September 8th and 10th, respectively.
