NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin Cross Country coach Cody Clark announced the meet schedule for the fall of 2017 on Wednesday, as the program looks to continue a record of success enjoyed in recent years. The schedule feature five total races (not including NCAA competition) and features four locations in Texas and one each in Alabama and Oklahoma. Last season, the women's team raced to a landslide victory at the Southland Conference championships, claiming their eighth conference championship, the most in Southland history. For the men's team, a runner-up finish last fall provides added motivation as the team looks to win a championship this season.
To open the season, SFA will compete at the Aggie Opener, hosted in College Station by Texas A & M on September 1. A limited squad will run modified (shorter) distances at the event, with some of the team staying back to train. Following that, the team will host the Lumberjack High School Invite on Saturday, September 2. While not an event the team will run in, the invite serves a great community event in which many local high schools will compete, resulting in 1500-2000 runners at the event.
On the 16th of September, the majority of team will run in the Southland Conference Preview in Abilene, Texas, serving as a way to get the rust off as well as getting the feel for the course the conference race will take place on. Closing out the month of September, the team will race with a full squad in the OSU Jamboree, hosted by Oklahoma State in Stillwater on the 30th. The Jamboree is the oldest consecutively run cross country meet in the nation, and will be a challenge for the team based on both the terrain of the course as well as a highly competitive field that features teams that will be at the National Championship meet later on down the road.
After the Jamboree, the team will run in the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on October 13. This last major race of the season will be a great barometer of where the team is at, and provides them a chance to see teams from other regions as well as run on a forgiving and well-liked course. From there, SFA will run at the Southland Conference Championships, as the women will look to repeat their team title from last season and the men look for their first team title since 2005.
Following the conference championships will be the South Central Regional, which takes place in College Station on November 10. Here, the men will bump up to 10km while the women stay at six kilometers in what amounts to a fast course overall. Both teams will be looking to finish in the top five in the Region.
Both teams will be looking to rally from significant losses from last season's squads, and will expect more from returning runners in 2017. For the men's side, Evan Barron returns after finishing 24th at the conference meet last season, while Larry Deramus and Quinlan McGregor are veteran returners as well for the Lumberjacks. For the Ladyjacks, defending their team title from 2016 will likely come from the efforts of top returner and 2016 SLC Freshman of the Year Taryn Surratt, who finished 12th at the conference championship last year. Claire Crone (14th) and Brittany Innis (17th) also registered top-20 finishes at the conference championships in 2016 and return for the Ladyjacks this fall.
