Ladyjacks Set to Face Rice in Exhibition Contest on Sunday Afternoon

HOUSTON, Texas -- The 2017 Stephen F. Austin University women's soccer team will face Rice University in an exhibition match on Sunday afternoon at Holloway Field in Houston. The matchup marks the second straight season in which the two teams have played an exhibition to open the Ladyjack's season, with last season's contest ending in a 0-0 draw.
The Ladyjacks will get their first opportunity to play a new opponent after a fall camp involving several intra-squad scrimmages, culminating in Friday's Purple and White game. Sunday's scrimmage is also the final tune-up for SFA before the 2017 regular season gets underway, and a looming matchup with Mississippi State next weekend offers a tough test for the Ladyjacks following their match against the Owls.
Rice posted an 11-5-1 record last season, and returns eight of 11 starters from the 2016 season as the squad finished second in the Conference USA standings. 16 total letterwinners from last season's squad give the Owls a veteran presence in the new campaign as they look to replicate the defensive success that saw them yield just 18 goals in 17 games.
For Stephen F. Austin, a roster loaded with depth at every position, buoyed by the return of 80% of the team's goals from last season, gives the team measured confidence heading into Sunday's exhibition and beyond. Reigning Southland Conference Midfielder of the Year Hanna Barker looks to build on her 10-goal, 10-assist season as a junior, and is joined by nine-goal scorer Breanna Moore on the attack. SFA scored 42 goals as a team in 2016, and possesses the offensive depth and personnel to increase that total in 2017.
Defensively, the Ladyjacks trot out a defense buoyed by returners as well as new additions. 2016 starters Carli Arthurs and Mari Gillespie lead the defensive backline in the new campaign, giving the Ladyjack goalkeeper corp a solid bulwark to improve on last season's defensive marks. The Ladyjacks yielded just 20 goals total last season, with just eight of those coming in conference play.
