
SFA Decathletes Place Fifth in Final Five-Man Webb Cup Standings

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Decathlon Association (DECA) recently unveiled the 2017 Webb Cup standings and in fifth-place on the five-man team list was Stephen F. Austin. The 'Jacks placed in a tie for 15th nationally with Baylor and Connecticut in the overall standings for the award which has been doled out annually since 2013.
SFA's fifth-place finish in the five-man team standings and 15th-place overall finish were the best finishes for the 'Jacks in the Webb Cup standings ever.
Initiated in an attempt to recognize colleges and universities for both decathlon quality and quantity and named for retired Tennessee coach Bill Webb, the Webb Cup is awarded for the national ordinal placing of two, three, four, five, six, seven and eight-man teams. The best scores of each student-athletes from Jan. 2 until mid-May are included in the total.
Led by Hunter Key's championship point total of 7,017 from the Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, SFA's group of five decathletes amassed a grand total of 30,922 points to finish 15th nationally in the final Webb Cup standings and fifth nationally among five-man teams. In addition to Key, Bradley Beaty, Tanner Parks, Conner Wilbur and Tyji Yulee each secured impressive point totals throughout the season to lift the 'Jacks into the upper echelon of decathlon teams from around the nation.
"It is great for our student-athletes to get this recognition," said SFA assistant track & field coach Ron McCown, who oversees the team's decathletes. "All five of these men competed and scored valuable points for us at the Southland Conference Championships this season. They are a committed group and are learning what kind of determination is required to excel in the decathlon. To see their progress is very rewarding and I am looking forward to seeing what the 2017-18 season has in store."
