SFA Sends Group to Shirley Crowe Multi-Event Meet

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Track and Field multi-event athletes will kick off the outdoor season with a two-day event in Houston, Texas hosted by Rice University. This will be the fourth time SFA has sent athletes to Houston for this event. Last year, Hunter Key racked up 6,554 points in the men’s decathlon to place fifth for the Lumberjacks, while Jillian Turner (4, 542 points) finished seventh on the women's side.
Day One will comprise of the first five events of the decathlon and the first four events of the heptathlon. The first decathlon event is the 100-meter dash slated to start at 2:30 p.m. with the long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400-meter run following. Conversely, the first heptathlon event is the 100-meter hurdles at 2:00 p.m. with the high jump, shot put and 200-meter run following after.
The next day will start with decathlon 110-meter hurdles starting at 1:00 p.m., and the heptathlon will start again at 3:00 p.m. at the long jump pit.
SFA will be taking nine student-athletes to this event, including the runner-up champion of the 2016 Southland Conference Outdoor Championship, Hunter Key. Other competitors are Conner Wilbur, who finished 8th in the SLC Outdoor Championship; Tanner Parks; Tyji Yulee; and Bradley Beaty.
For the women, Jillian Turner and Kori Westmoreland will be returning to the Ley Track, while freshman Caitlin Lennon and Sammi Jo Brashears will be making their debut to the collegiate outdoor season.
Results for the event will be posted to the Rice Athletics website after the competition is complete.
After the Shirley Crowe Multi-Event, SFA will be sending the full squad to the TCU Track and Field Invitational on March 17 for the official kick off to the 2017 outdoor season.
