Ladyjacks compete in their second tournament of the fall, travel to Illinois for McKendree University’s Brunswick Bearcat Open
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – On the heels of a third-place finish last weekend at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational to start the 2017-18 season, the Stephen F. Austin bowling team continues its fall slate of tournaments this weekend in Illinois. The Ladyjacks travel to Fairview Heights, Illinois, for the Brunswick Bearcat Open held at St. Clair Bowl Friday-Sunday, Oct. 27-29.
The three-day tournament is hosted by defending NCAA national champion McKendree University, who became the first NCAA Division II school to claim the NCAA bowling this past spring. The Brunswick Bearcat Open will feature five, five-game Baker matches Friday followed by five traditional team matches Saturday. Bracket play will conclude the tournament Sunday with three best 4-of-7 Baker matches. Pin total between the first two days of play will be used to determine seeding for Sunday's bracket play. Play will get underway Friday at 9:40 a.m. CST as Saturday's team matches will start at 9:30 a.m. and Sunday's bracket play at 8:30 a.m.
A total of 24 teams will be competing in Illinois, including six of the eight Southland Bowling League members. Arkansas State, Vanderbilt, Sam Houston State, Monmouth and Valparaiso will all join SFA at the Brunswick Bearcat Open. The field of competition features 17 of the top-25 teams in the nation, including the top five and nine of the top 10. Top-ranked and tournament host McKendree, No. 2 Nebraska, No. 3 Arkansas State, No. 4 Vanderbilt, No. 5 Sam Houston State, No. 6 SFA, No. 7 Maryland Eastern Shore, No. 8 Fairleigh Dickinson, No. 10 Central Missouri, No. 11 Wisconsin-Whitewater, No. 13 Monmouth, No. 14 Saint Francis University (Pa.), No. 18 North Carolina A&T, No. 19 UAB, No. 20 Prairie View A&M, No. 21 St. Francis College (N.Y.) and No. 24 Youngstown State all appear on the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Preseason Poll and are a part of the 24-team tournament field. Lincoln Memorial University, who is receiving votes in the national poll, along with St. Francis, Maryville University, Drury, Aurora, Valparaiso, North Central College and Lincoln University round out the teams competing in Illinois.
The Ladyjacks finished last weekend in Kenner, Louisiana, with a 9-4 record, claiming the second-highest pinfall total (14,310) and owning the second-best game average (210.4). With match wins over fifth-ranked Sam Houston State, No. 17 Tulane and No. 19 UAB at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational, SFA will look to improve upon its third-place result this weekend in Illinois.
Seeking its first tournament title since claiming the NCAA championship in 2016, the Ladyjacks will rely on senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.), who was named tournament MVP this past Sunday in Louisiana. Schwartz knocked down a tournament-best 1,228 pins and averaged an impressive 245.6 in five games to claim top-bowler honors. A pair of true freshmen also stood out in their first ever collegiate bowling tournament last weekend and will attempt to continue their hot start at the Brunswick Bearcat Open. Freshman Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.) turned in a seventh-place individual finish last weekend with a 216.2 game average, while fellow freshman Sarah Voiers (Austin, Texas) was SFA's fourth-best bowler with a 200.25 game average. Junior Dakotah Hazlewood (Capron, Ill.) finished 17th among all bowlers at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational with a 205.6 game average and is ready for another strong showing this weekend.
Joining Schwartz, Gill, Voiers and Hazlewood in Illinois and set to compete are senior Kelsi Anderson (San Antonio, Texas), juniors Paige Beeney (Salado, Texas) and Morgan Reising (Lewisville, Texas), sophomore Megan Eaglehouse (Cibolo, Texas), and freshman Dakota Faichnie (Innisfil, Ontario, Canada).
