NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin Men's and Women's teams head to the Houston Invitational this weekend for the second meet of the 2017 Indoor season. The meet will take place inside the Yeoman Field House over the course of Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27-28. The field of competition includes 14 universities with four other Southland opponents as well as three other big schools: Houston, Rice, and UTSA. For the heptathlon and pentathlon competitions there will be some international play with the addition of several athletes from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, Mexico.
Things will get kicked off on Friday at 10:00 a.m. with the women's weight throw, and then the pentathlon will take the track at 12:00 noon for the 60m hurdles portion of their competition. SFA is entering two freshmen, Sammi Joe Brashears and Caitlin Lennon, into the pentathlon after their performance at the Samford Multi's last week. The men will follow behind in the heptathlon with their 60m sprint event. The field events will resume at 2:00 p.m. for the men's invitational long jump, then women's pole vault, men's collegiate long jump, and the men's weight throw. In the men's weight throw, freshman David Castillo will be looking for another terrific event after he finished sixth at Texas A&M. The track events will begin at 4:30 p.m. in a rolling schedule starting with the preliminary run of the women's 400m dash, followed by the men. Junior Tiffany William will lead the Lumberjacks in the 400m after her 56.93 seconds performance two weeks ago. The night will be capped off with the distance medley relay.
Saturday morning will start with a 9:00 a.m. call for the men and women's shot put and the women's long jump. Senior Lucas Akins will be leading the Lumberjacks after taking fifth in shot put at the Texas A&M Invitational. Junior Derek Orlando will be looking to out throw Akins after taking seventh at the last competition. At 10:00 a.m., the teams will wrap up the heptathlon on the track, and the main track event semifinals and finals will get underway at 12:00 noon. In the 800m run, the Lumberjacks are hoping to have another dominating performance from sophomore Madison Compass, sophomore Allison Compass, and freshman Caelidh Ross. Power sprinters, junior Aaron Piper and Tedrick Hawkins will take the track at 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. for the 60m dash and the 200m dash, respectively. Piper broke his personal record at the Texas A&M Invitational and finished third with a time of 6.79 seconds. Hawkins finished fourth in the 200m last time with a 21.71 second run.
