NEW ORLEANS – After placing 12th in the 400 meters at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships last week, Stephen F. Austin sophomore My’Lik Kerley was named a Second Team All-American as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Kerley’s first such recognition marks the fourth straight year in which the SFA track and field program has produced an All-American.
Kerley posted a personal best time of 45.98 seconds in the 400m at nationals, held inside the University of Oregon’s Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. He was the top performer from a non-Power Five program and the fifth fastest underclassman, taking 12th out of the nation’s fastest 24 men overall in the event.
Kerley was also honored as an Honorable Mention All-American by the organization in the 4x400m relay, along with fellow sophomores Johnathan Joe and Tedrick Hawkins and junior Will Gibson. One of the fastest relays in the country entering nationals, the group was clocked at 3:05.23 in the semifinals to seemingly advance to finals in the seventh position. However, the ‘Jacks were disqualified for stepping over the line on the inside of their lane during a curve.
Senior distance runner Charles Mathenge ended his track and field career by achieving Honorable Mention All-America status in the 10,000-meter run. The Kenyan finished 21st in the event with a time of 31:11.02. He was the first Lumberjack distance runner to ever qualify for nationals in the 10,000m in track and field.
Student-athletes were awarded First Team USTFCCCA All-America honors by virtue of finishing among the top eight in the their events, including as a member of a relay, during the NCAA Championships held from June 8-11. Second Team All-America honors went to those who finished ninth through 16th and Honorable Mention status was accomplished by finishing 17th through 24th.
