NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A pair of Stephen F. Austin student-athletes have been recognized for their efforts in the classroom as tennis’ Valeria Terentyeva and football’s Marlon Walls were honored by the SFA physics department in their end of the semester award ceremony.
Terentyeva earned the William H. Bailey Outstanding Physics graduate, earning her degree Saturday with a 4.00 GPA. The award goes to the highest ranking graduating physics major of the August, December and May graduations, awarded by the Alumni Association. It was established in 1989 by physics alumnus William H. Bailey, class of 1977.
The award adds to an impressive SFA career for Terentyeva, a four year letterwinner for the Ladyjack tennis team and helping lead SFA to the 2015 Southland Conference championship. An all-conference selection in 2015, Terentyeva is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District and SLC All-Academic team honoree and was SFA’s Kathy McGough Award Winner, given to the graduating female student-athlete with the highest GPA.
Walls was awarded the Brian Patrick Hanson Memorial Physics Scholarship Award, named after the student who maintained an “A” average in all courses from kindergarten through graduate school. It is given to a physics major registered for PHY 242 (Technical Physics II) and is based on overall GPA, physics GPA and progress in the physis major program.
Walls boasts a 4.00 GPA in his two years at SFA, majoring in engineering physics with a minor in mathematics. A two year letterwinner for the Lumberjacks, Walls has accumulated 29 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions and is poised to be a key contributor this fall. A CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, Walls was football’s Murray Shaw Award winner for this season, given to the player with the highest GPA.
The awards add to another impressive year for the SFA Athletic department in 2015-16, one which produced three Southland Conference champions, two NCAA tournament appearances and the program's first NCAA Division I national champion in women's bowling. The efforts of the Lumberjack and Ladyjack athletic teams have clinched the 2015-16 SLC Commissioners Cup for the second-straight year and the fourth time overall.
