NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin track and field teams flexed their muscles on the final day of the 2016 Skechers Carl Kight Invitational on Saturday at the Fletcher Garner Track inside Homer Bryce Stadium. The ‘Jacks won 13 event titles in pure dominating fashion on the final day to bump their weekend total to 16.
Sophomore hurdler Kerry Gleason and senior sprinter Aliyah Davis collected three event titles apiece to lead SFA. Gleason posted a personal best in the 110-meter hurdles to win in 14.20 seconds. He then crossed in 51.99 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles to complete the hurdle sweep. To cap a busy day on the track, Gleason ran the anchor leg for SFA’s winning 4x400-meter relay. Johnathan Joe, Will Gibson and Garrett Moore joined Gleason by posting a time of 3:13.29 to best 11 other teams.
Gleason ranks first in the Southland Conference in the 400-meter hurdles and second at the 110m distance while SFA still owns the best mark in the conference and 16th best time in the world this year in the 4x400m relay.
Davis went a perfect 3-for-3 in event titles on the afternoon, taking first in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 4x100m relay. She used a PR of 11.71 seconds in the 100m, posted 24.35 seconds in the 200m and then joined forces with Bria McIver, Chelsi Gill and Dawnshae Evans to post 46.36 seconds in the 4x100. Gill came runner-up to Davis in both the 100m and 200m.
McIver (14.30) and Tiare Dugger (14.52) went 1-2 in the 100-meter hurdles and Tasia Williams (1:01.12) and Valerie Osamor (1:02.77) did the same in the 400-meter hurdles to give SFA the men’s/women’s hurdles sweep.
The Ladyjacks got a season-best result in the 4x400m relay to emerge as the top team out of nine entered. Evans, Osamor, Tiffany Williams and Tasia Williams combined to notch a mark of 3:43.14 – the second best time in the SLC this year.
Senior Jessica Spelling and junior Madeline Kaufmann each won individual titles in the field events for the Ladyjacks. Spelling finished on top of 19 women in the shot put, recording a top throw of 46-7.25 (14.20m). She also grabbed a runner-up showing the discus, spinning one 158-7 (48.33m). A day after placing second in the heptathlon, Kaufmann needed just one throw – 119-3 (36.36m) – to win the javelin.
Rounding out the top performances for the men, sophomore sprinter My’Lik Kerley stood out with a big win in the 400-meter dash. He neared his personal best with a time of 46.61 seconds, edging teammates Joe (47.73) and Gibson (48.09) as part of a 1-2-3 showing for the ‘Jacks.
