NACOGDOCHES, Texas – After sending athletes to Rice and McNeese over the last week, the full Stephen F. Austin track and field squad is set to compete at the UTSA Invitational this weekend at the Park West Athletics Complex in San Antonio. It will be the first team outdoor competition for the ‘Jacks in 2016.
Friday’s action will begin at noon with the hammer throw and the javelin for both men and women. The women will open up the discus competition at 3:00 p.m. with the men to follow, wrapping up the field events for day one. The men’s and women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000-meter run will take place on Friday evening beginning at 7:00 p.m.
The remaining field events, including the pole vault, high jump, shot put, long jump and triple jump, are slated to start at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday to open day two events. The women’s 4x100-meter relay will start the running finals at 2:00 p.m. with the 4x400m relays capping the invitational at the end of a rolling schedule.
Along with SFA and host UTSA, Houston, Kansas State, Sam Houston State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Wichita State are all slated to make up the talented seven-team field.
The ‘Jacks started the 2016 outdoor season last Saturday by sending a group of pole vaulters to take part in the McNeese Cowboy Relays. Senior Cameron Meyer and junior Daven Murphree highlighted the meet for SFA, finishing second and third, respectfully, out of 18 competitors on the men’s side. Meyer now ranks second in the Southland Conference this season with his jump of 17-0.75 (5.20m) and Murphree sits fourth after clearing 16-6.75 (5.05m) in Lake Charles.
This past Tuesday and Wednesday, the multi-event athletes began their outdoor campaigns at the Rice Shirley Crowe Multi in Houston. Hunter Key racked up 6,554 points in the men’s decathlon to place fifth for the Lumberjacks while Jillian Turner (4,542 pts) and Laniya Taylor (4,416 pts) finished seventh and eighth to lead the Ladyjacks.
Following this weekend’s team event in San Antonio, SFA will send a full group back to Houston for the Rice Victor Lopez Classic next weekend from March 25-26. For more updates on SFA Track and Field, follow the team on Twitter (@SFA_TFXC).
