Southland News Release
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to compete in the 2016 Southland Conference Championships, hosted by SFA at Pecan Acres Park, on Friday morning. The men will race first in the 8,000 meter races at 8:30 a.m. CT, followed by the women 6,000 meter races at 9:30 a.m. CT.
The Lumberjack will be in the hunt for the title after a terrific finish the last couple meets. The men will be looking to take home the team title, a feat that they have not accomplished since 2005. Leading the pack will be senior Charles Mathenge, who is competing in his last race as a Lumberjack. The 2015 NCAA qualifier, Mathenge had a second place finish at the OSU Jamboree in September, and looks to surpass his runner-up standings from last year.
Senior Josh Torres, who finished 28th last year, has had a really good year finishing first two weeks ago in the Aggieland Open with a time of 24:49.15. Other returner to the championship race will be redshirt junior Topper Markham, redshirt junior Quinlin McGregor, redshirt junior John Shirk, and redshirt sophomore Larry Deramus. New to the Championship stage will be redshirt freshman Brandt Preston and freshman Evan Barron.
The Ladyjacks women team will be looking to also bring home the team title, which they last received in 2012. The women have a solid pack and high potential as they are led by redshirt junior Taylor Anderson and senior Samantha Ottman. Anderson had a sixth place individual result in the 5,000 meter Aggieland Open. Ottman placed seventh in the OSU Jamboree with a time of 18:35.8. The women have finished top five in all the races they have participated in this season. The group of senior Mary Luster, redshirt junior Rana Ryan, and junior Brittany Innis all know the expectations of this Championship meet. Freshmen Claire Crone, Taryn Surratt, and Caelidh Ross are new to this caliber meet but have proven themselves as close contenders to the title race.
Race highlights and interviews will be posted to the Southland Conference Digital Netowrk, available via southland.org/watch and the Southland Conference app.
SFA specific live updates will be provided via Twitter as well (@SFA_TFXC).
