NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Six multi-events athletes on the Stephen F. Austin track and field teams are entered in the Samford Stand Alone Multi this Wednesday and Thursday, where they will compete in their first pentathlons/heptathlons of the 2016 indoor season at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
The men’s heptathlon will get underway on Wednesday afternoon at noon and will conclude on Thursday. The women’s pentathlon will take place entirely on Thursday with action beginning at noon as well.
For the Lumberjacks, it will be sophomore Hunter Key and freshmen Tyji Yulee and Tanner Parks taking part among the 16-man field. The Ladyjacks will send junior Madeline Kaufmann, sophomore Laniya Taylor and freshman Jillian Turner into the mix of 26 women.
Kaufmann had a solid sophomore campaign, taking third place in the women’s pentathlon at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships last February. She posted 3,513 points overall to help the Ladyjacks collect six valuable points.
Kaufmann, along with Taylor, also found success during the outdoor season in 2015. Kaufmann compiled 4,692 points and Taylor earned 4,495 points at the SLC Outdoor Championships to finish 6th and 7th, respectfully, in the women’s heptathlon.
Key is the top returning multi-event athlete on the men’s side, after placing third in the decathlon last year at the outdoor conference meet with a point total of 6,715. He finished just outside scoring range at the SLC indoor meet in February with a ninth place effort in the men’s heptathlon (4,476 points).
The men’s heptathlon includes seven events, including the 60m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m. The women’s pentathlon consists of the 60m hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800m.
