
Humphreys' 600th Gives SFA Tournament Title

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin head women's volleyball coach Debbie Humphreys had a day to remember on Saturday at the 2015 Hampton Inn & Suites Volleyball Invitational in Shelton Gym. SFA's coaching great led her team to sweeps of South Dakota State and Columbia to reach 600 wins in her storied coaching career.
Now in her 28th season at the helm of the SFA volleyball program, Humphreys becomes the 15th winningest active coach at the NCAA Division I level with Saturday's results. She owns a 600-306 record overall (.662).
The Ladyjacks (4-3) were crowned the champions of their home tournament after sweeping all four opponents during the weekend. Senior outside hitter Tori Bates was named the Tournament MVP and senior middle blocker Jacque Allen was selected to the All-Tournament Team for their outstanding play. In four matches, Bates posted 38 kills, hit .318 and chipped in 17 digs. Allen finished the weekend with 37 kills on .559 hitting while adding nine blocks.
SFA opened day two with a convincing 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-19, 25-14) of South Dakota State. The Ladyjacks got a balanced attack offensively as five players had between 9-11 kills. Outside hitters Makenzee Hanna and Haley Coleman led the way with 11 kills, middle blockers Allen and Justice Walker added 10 apiece and Bates ripped nine kills on the morning.
Junior setter Shannon Connell was terrific all match long, dishing out 49 assists in three sets (16.33/set), including 18 in each of the final two periods. She was the centerpiece of an SFA attack that hit an impressive .340 as a team. Connell chipped in seven digs and two kills as well.
Senior libero OJ Olson continued to impress, getting 13 digs while helping limit SDSU to a .141 hitting percentage in the match. Coleman contributed 10 digs to go along with her 11 kills for her second career double-double.
In the afternoon contest against Columbia, SFA cruised to another 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-15, 25-19) to finish the tournament with a 12-0 advantage in sets played. Walker and Coleman guided SFA with 11 and 10 kills respectfully, while Allen grounded nine and hit at a match-high .600 clip.
Coleman registered yet another double-double after digging up 11 balls. Olson finished with 20 digs and helped hold Columbia to an .033 attack percentage.
