SFA 3, ULM 1
MONROE, La. – The Stephen F. Austin women’s volleyball team got big performances from its middle-blocking tandem to take down ULM 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-20) on Monday afternoon inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Ladyjacks improve to 5-3 on the year with the victory and have won five straight matches dating back to Friday.
Junior Justice Walker and senior Jacque Allen combined for 33 kills during the Labor Day match, showing why they are one of the most feared middle blocking duos in the game. Walker notched a season-high 18 kills on an efficient .469 attack percentage. Allen’s 15 kills while hitting .393 also contributed to SFA’s impressive .293 team hitting mark.
The Ladyjacks got production at the outside hitter position from veterans and newcomers alike. Senior Tori Bates registered 11 winners on .261 hitting and freshman Haley Coleman chipped in nine kills on a team-high 34 swings. Fellow freshman Makenzee Hanna posted five kills on the afternoon.
Junior setter Shannon Connell backed up her standout showing at the SFA Volleyball Invitational over the weekend with 52 assists on Monday, averaging 13 per set. She also finished with six digs and two kills.
Reigning Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week OJ Olson led the team defensively with 16 digs and Coleman added 15 to go along with her nine kills.
The Warhawks (5-4) won the opening set 25-21 behind a .645 team hitting percentage but cooled off after that. SFA tied things up heading into the break with a 25-21 victory in set two and kept its foot on the gas the rest of the way. The Ladyjacks led throughout the entire third and fourth sets to secure their fifth straight victory.
SFA will return to tournament action next weekend in Tulsa. Fans can listen to every match by tuning in to SFAVolleyBlog.net where Greg Miller will have the call.
