
SFA Runs Past NSU in Home Dual

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin cross country teams started the 2015 season on a high note on Friday night, as both the men and women beat Southland Conference rival Northwestern State in the SFA Lumberjack Opener at Pecan Acres City Park.
Both the SFA men and women tallied 20 team points in Friday’s dual meet, with the top five runners on each team being scored according to individual place. The Lumberjacks beat the Demons by 19 points while the Ladyjacks held an 18-point cushion over the Lady Demons.
Redshirt sophomore Taylor Anderson won the women’s two-mile race with a time of 11:46.25. She was followed closely by fellow redshirt sophomore teammate Macy Davis (11:48.92) and true freshman Jamie Contreras (12:12.50).
Junior Bridgette Kozar and freshman Kendra Long crossed in fifth and sixth, respectfully, competing unattached. SFA’s next point scorer was junior Mary Luster, who grabbed eighth place with her time of 12:36.88.
On the men’s side, junior Anthony Gallardo led the way in the 5,000-meter race with a mark of 16:22.30. He came in second overall with teammates Connor McLain (16:33.51) and Matt Farina (16:36.81) the next two to finish. Freshman Josh Perez started his collegiate career with a fifth place effort competing unattached.
The Lumberjacks’ final two point scorers were John Shirk and Quinlin McGregor, who came in sixth and seventh with respective times of 16:45.51 and 16:46.85.
SFA will next be in action on Friday, Sept. 11 at the Rice Invitational in Houston. The ‘Jacks will also help with the SFA High School Lumberjack Invitational back at Pecan Park on Saturday morning starting at 8:00 a.m.
