SFA Opens Fall Campaign at Rice Invitational

HOUSTON – In its first action of the fall season, the Stephen F. Austin women’s tennis team took part in the 2015 Rice University Invitational at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Friday-Sunday (Sept. 25-27).
The Ladyjacks put together a record of 12-12 through the course of the three-day invitational, which included a 6-4 mark in doubles action and a 6-8 finish in singles play. Rounding out the 11-team field was Rice, Sam Houston State, Texas State, the University of Texas-San Antonio, New Mexico State, Texas State, Texas, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Houston and Baylor.
A 2014-15 All-Southland Conference second-team doubles selection, senior Valeria Terentyeva joined forces with freshman Liza Aginskaya to record a 2-1 record in two-on-two matches. The tandem began the tournament by besting the Sam Houston State duo of Ema Barkovic and Maria Garoz Moreno by a 7-5 tally before wrapping up the meet with a 7-6 (5) triumph over Mila Milanovic and Casey Carrie – also from Sam Houston State.
In the second-flight singles, freshman Lauren Hidalgo-Smith notched a 2-1 record, too. The Boca Raton, Fla., product took down Barkovic by a 6-3, 6-4 tally in her first match in the consolation bracket. The next match pitted the freshman against Houston’s Tina Rupert and once again Hidalgo-Smith pulled out a victory – this one of the 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2 variety.
Although the singles portion of the tournament was scheduled to conclude on Sunday, rain throughout the day forced the cancellation of the remainder of the one-on-one matches.
