AUSTIN, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin men's 4x400 meter relay team improved their season best time by over one second and Daven Murphree raised his season best mark by 4.5 inches in the men's pole vault to close the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds strong on Saturday at the University of Texas.
The mile relay squad of Johnathan Joe, My'Lik Kerley, Tedrick Hawkins and Joshua Taylor proved they're one of the fastest groups in the nation late on Saturday night, posting a blazing fast time of 3:06.75 -- topping their season best by 1.07 seconds. The group finished in 15th place in the entire west region, only .53 seconds off the qualifying pace.
Outside of Taylor, who is going to the 2015 NCAA Championships in the 400m hurdles, the 4x400 team is comprised of three freshman with unlimited potential for the years to come.
Murphree also ended the season strong on Saturday in the pole vault. The sophomore cleared 17-4.5 (5.30m) on his third attempt to take 15th out of the top 48 athletes in the west. The mark topped his previous season best (17-0) by 4.5 inches.
Taylor joins pole vaulter Demi Payne as SFA's two national qualifiers in 2015. The duo will make the trip to Eugene, Oregon to compete on track and field's biggest stage from June 10-13.
