SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Sophomores Hunter Key and Madeline Kaufmann each put up big numbers on day one of the David Noble ASU Multi Meet on Thursday afternoon as each Stephen F. Austin athlete sits in ninth place in their respective event at the halfway point.
Both Key and Kaufmann notched personal best first day totals in the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon at the multi-event meet hosted by Angelo State.
In a field of 18 women, Kaufmann is currently in ninth place with 2,769 points in the heptathlon. She accumulated a good chunk of points in the 100-meter hurdles and the 200-meter run. In the hurdles, she finished in 15.50 seconds to garner 777 points while her 26.45 time in the 200 warranted 758 points.
Kaufmann will have three events to complete on Friday -- the long jump, the javelin and one of her best events in the 800-meter run.
Also in ninth place at the halfway point, Key had big showings in races at the 100- and 400-meter distances. He came in at 11.18 seconds in the 100 for 767 points to start the day before claiming 790 points after a 50.53 second loop around the track in the final event of day one.
Key will still have an opportunity to gain ground on the talented field of 14 on Friday in the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run.
