FRISCO, Texas -- Demi Payne has been named the Southland Conference Field Athlete of the Week after another impressive performance on the women's pole vault scene, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon. The honor is Payne's fourth of the 2015 season after collecting three such awards during the indoor season.
In the lone home meet of the outdoor season, Payne didn't disappoint the hundreds of fans who came to watch her compete at the 2015 Skechers Carl Kight Invitational at Homer Bryce Stadium last Thursday. She recorded a jump of 14-9 (4.50m) to win her seventh individual title of the year, break her own SFA outdoor record and set a new Fletcher Garner Track facility standard.
Payne, a junior from New Braunfels, entered into Thursday's competition at 14-1 and after claiming a clean jump at that height, went up and over 14-9 (4.50m) on her first attempt. The excitement of the day came when Payne raised the bar to a new NCAA outdoor record height of 15-1.75 (4.62m). Already the indoor collegiate record-holder, Payne nearly knocked down another national mark in three quality runs at the height to end the day.
After two outdoor meets, Payne currently holds the second best jump in the NCAA this season.
Up next, Payne will head back to the University of Texas for the Texas Invitational on Saturday. Events are slated to get underway at 10:00 a.m.
