SFA Remains Atop SLC Standings With 5-2 Win

NEW ORLEANS -- Stephen F. Austin kept its Southland Conference record perfect, notching a 5-2 victory at New Orleans Saturday afternoon. SFA improved to 12-5 on the year and 6-0 in SLC play, remaining atop the conference standings.
"This was a great win for the girls," said head coach Roberto Aspillaga. "New Orleans is a program on the rise, and they came in swinging after losing a nail baiter to Northwestern State yesterday. The wind was a major obstacle, and the team is competing and problem solving at a high level. It's never pretty under these conditions, but the girls are showing they have the will to win regardless of the circumstances."
SFA fell behind early in the doubles competition, falling in the No. 2 slot 8-1. But Valeria Terentyeva and Vivienne Kulicke answered with an 8-4 victory at the No. 3 spot, capped by an 8-6 win by No. 1 Malena Gordo and Dhanielly Quevedo to secure the doubles point for the Ladyjacks.
In the singles competition, SFA took four of the six matches, pacing the Ladyjacks to the 5-2 win. Gordo won 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot with Denise Maxl claiming a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position. Kulicke and Terentyeva then helped secure the win for SFA, earning a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 4 spot and a 7-5, 2-6, 10-6 victory at No. 5, respectively.
With the win, SFA improved to 6-0 in SLC play, leading Nicholls and Northwestern State (7-1) and McNeese State (6-1) in the fight for the regular season conference championship.
That sets up a crucial weekend for the Ladyjacks who will face two of those competitors right on their heels. SFA takes on McNeese State Saturday, April 11, at 11 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. match against Nicholls on Sunday, April 12. Both of those matches will be played at Schlief Tennis Complex.
