WALNUT, Calif. -- It didn't take long for Stephen F. Austin's Brittany Innis to break her own school record in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. The freshman posted a new program-best time of 10:44.42 in the event at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, California during the first day of the 57th annual Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday night.
One of the biggest track and field meets in the nation, which boasts the motto, "Where the world's best athletes compete", Innis held her own against some of the fastest collegiate runners in the sport. Her record-breaking time was good for a seventh place finish of 16 competitors.
The race was Innis' first since first claiming the school record at SFA's Skechers Carl Kight Invitational on April 2. She was clocked at 10:45.58 in front of the home fans.
SFA's other distance runners also fared well late on Thursday night on the west coast. Charles Mathenge threatened the program record in the men's 10,000-meter run, posting a mark of 29:34.18 -- just under seven seconds from the current SFA standard.
Colby Mehmen finished 11th out of 36 in his section of the 10k, running to a time of 30:22.07.
On the women's side, Samantha Ottman and Courtney High also competed at the 10,000-meter distance, recording times of 36:15.41 and 36:50.47 respectfully.
On Friday, school record holder Rana Ryan will run in the women's 1,500-meter run at 1:00 p.m. CT in the Mt. SAC Relays and Anthony Gallardo will compete in the men's 5k at 8:30 p.m. CT in the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University.
The rest of the SFA track and field teams will be in action on Saturday for the Michael Johnson Classic, hosted by Baylor.
