FRISCO, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin junior Kyle Thornell has been named the Southland Conference's Hitter of the Week, announced today by the league office. It is the first weekly honor of the season for the Lumberjacks and the first of Thornell's career.
Thornell was a key performer for the Lumberjacks as SFA claimed its first series victory of the season, taking two of three from A&M-Corpus Christi. In the three-game series, Thornell went 9-of-11, logging three hits in each game, for an impressive .818 batting average.
He registered six singles, two doubles and a homerun against the Islanders, driving in three runs while scoring five times for the `Jacks in the series. The offensive explosion gave Thornell an impressive 1.273 slugging percentage with an .842 on base percentage. Including the one-game against West Virginia, Thornell hit .692 (9-of-13) with a 1.077 slugging percentage and a .765 on base percentage.
The production over the weekend helped Thornell improve his batting average to .286, which ranks third among the Lumberjacks. He leads the `Jacks with 14 RBIs and is tied for second in the SLC standings with three doubles on the year, tied for third on SFA with 24 hits.
Thornell and the rest of the Lumberjacks head to Arkansas-Little Rock for a one game series against the Trojans, getting underway Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. SFA then begins a key six-game SLC home stand, beginning with a three game series against rival Sam Houston State Friday.
