AUSTIN, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's 4x400 meter relay team took fourth out of 46 teams to earn a spot in the premier final event of the 88th Annual Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on campus of the University of Texas on Friday. Trey Darty and La'Tricia Griffin also each had big performances in the field events for the Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks on the third day of the meet.
Johnathan Joe, Tedrick Hawkins, Joshua Taylor and My'Lik Kerley teamed up to post a time of 3:08.51 for SFA. In a field of 46, the time was good enough for fourth place and one of nine automatic spots in Saturday afternoon's final. The time was also the fifth best in the nation so far in the 2015 outdoor season. Clemson will be the team to beat on Saturday after running the 4x400 in 3:07.82, earning the top seed time.
In the field events, Darty soared to a fourth place finish in his section of the men's long jump final, jumping 23-8.75 feet (7.23m). After two attempts, Darty held the best mark of the 15-man field, and after six allotted runs kept the distance from his opening jump. TCU's Ramone Bailey won the section with a leap of 24-3 (7.39m).
Griffin also placed in the top eight among the nation's best athletes in the women's shot put. Her best mark was 46 feet, four inches (14.12m) and came on her third attempt after building on each of her first two throws. The third heave proved to be the best, and good enough for a seventh place finish out of 15 competitors and the fifth best school affiliated mark in the section. Baylor's Cion Hicks owned the best distance with a 51-3.75 throw (15.64m).
The Texas Relays will conclude on Saturday with some of the premier events taking place. Highlighting the day's finals will be the men's 4x400 meter relay final at 4:05 p.m. and NCAA record holder Demi Payne in the women's pole vault final. Payne will go for her seventh individual title of the year among a talented field starting at noon.
