Kaufmann, Key Take Fourth at Rice

HOUSTON, Texas - Stephen F. Austin's Hunter Key and Madeline Kaufmann started the 2015 outdoor track and field season on the right foot on Tuesday and Wednesday as each multi-event specialist took fourth at the Shirley Crowe Multi-Events Meet.
Key, who sat back in 10th place at the halfway point entering Wednesday's action, jumped six spots and earned a personal best 6,418 points in the men's decathlon. Key remained steady through the second day's five events: 110 meter hurdles (16.40 seconds), discus (35.61m), pole vault (3.80m), javelin (53.26m) and finally the 1,500 meter run (4:46.23).
Key shattered his old PR by 400 points in the sophomore's first outdoor competition of the spring. His previous best was 6,018 points.
Kaufmann maintained her fourth place standing that she enjoyed after day one in the women's heptathlon. Also a sophomore, Kaufmann collected a personal-best 4,602 points to fly past her old mark of 4,232. She jumped 5.25m in the long jump to start the day before posting a 29.46m mark in the javelin and a time of 2:23.61 seconds in the 800m. One of her best events, Kauffman took second in the 800m among the field of 14 to finish the day.
The rest of the SFA track and field team will be in action from Thursday to Saturday this week in the 2015 John Mitchell Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa.
