NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin track and field program is branching out into the Nacogdoches community to help raise money for the Kathy Solomon Springfield Scholarship Fund, in conjunction with Amie Morton and the SFA Alumni Association.
The men's and women's track and field teams along with the SFA cross country squads are leading the charge on the fundraiser this Thursday through Saturday at the Nacogdoches Raising Cane's restaurant. For every customer who mentions the Kathy Solomon Springfield Scholarship, Cane's will donate 15 percent of sales to the cause.
"Kathy Springfield meant so much to the SFA athletics department and the university as a whole," said head track and field coach Phil Olson. "She was truly one of the nicest, most welcoming people that you could imagine. She built strong relationships with coaches and administrators and her impact on the lives of the student-athletes was very apparent every single day.
"Kathy was a great mentor to many young men and women who crossed her path, whether as an administrative assistant or an academic advisor, and was just absolutely loved by so many people."
An academic advisor both in the athletics department and in the kinesiology building on campus, Kathy worked at SFA for more than 20 years.
"Kathy advised her students to take the courses they needed to earn their degree and graduate in a timely manner," said Ron Springfield. "She advised each and every one of her students as if they were her own kids. To honor her memory we wish to continue her legacy."
Fresh off their sweep of the team titles at the 2015 Southland Conference Indoor Championships last week, Olson's student-athletes will be present at Cane's informing customers of the fundraiser and raising awareness for the scholarship.
The Nacogdoches branch of the restaurant chain, which is located at 1831 North Street, is open from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m. on Thursday and 10:00 a.m.-12:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
"The most important thing is that we're trying to get the community involved to raise enough money for this great cause," said Olson. "We are so grateful that Raising Cane's has agreed to help us in our efforts.
"To just be one part of the process to help this scholarship program come to fruition is the least our program could do."
