Southland Conference Release
FRISCO, Texas – Stephen F. Austin volleyball senior OJ Olson earned a spot on the Southland Conference All-Academic First Team it was announced by the league office today.
The All-Academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors from each Southland Conference university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
One of four seniors on the Ladyjacks’ 2015 roster, Olson has compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.10 and is majoring in mathematics.
In her final season sporting SFA volleyball colors, Olson submitted one of the best seasons ever by a Ladyjack player while serving as a team captain as well as a mainstay in the squad’s back row. The Cedar Park, Texas, product was SFA’s defensive lynchpin, starting all 34 matches and finishing the season as one of two players on the roster who took part in all 128 sets. While in the libero uniform, Olson amassed 664 digs which works out to a per set average of 5.19.
Both of those aforementioned figures ranked second in the 13-team Southland Conference and when stacked up against all other NCAA Division I volleyball players, her dig total ranks eighth in the nation while her digs per set figure stands as the 21st-highest.
With Olson anchoring things in the back row, the Ladyjacks finished third in the SLC in digs per set (16.12) and opponents hit just .192 against SFA - the fifth-lowest opponent attack percentage in the league.
When adding her career numbers together, Olson currently sits in third place in the SFA record books in two categories - total digs (2,140) and career digs per set (4.48). Her 664 digs in 2015 are the second-highest single-season total ever by an SFA player and on October 28 she became the third Ladyjacks player ever to arrive at the 2,000 dig plateau in SFA’s 3-0 home triumph over Grambling State.
In the middle of November, Olson was selected to the All-Southland Conference First Team following Second Team nods as a junior and a sophomore. The Ladyjacks wrapped up their 2015 campaign with a 20-14 record which included an 11-5 mark in SLC play and a number-three seed in the Southland Conference Tournament.
