Southland Conference Release
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin junior defender Kelly Ann Craig has been tabbed as the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her contributions to two shutout victories over the weekend, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon. The honor is the second during Craig’s career and is the second individual weekly honor for the Ladyjacks this season.
A native of Houston, Texas (Stratford HS), Craig played a pivotal role in key wins against Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana in SFA’s final two home games of the year. On Friday night against the Colonels, Craig recorded an assist in the 69th minute to all but put the game away. She played a perfect ball to teammate Amanda Doyle from the right wing, who was then able to tuck it away inside the right post.
Craig created several great looks at goal by getting involved in the attack from her right back position when opportunities presented themselves in each match. Overall, she ended the weekend with four shots and one on goal. Her assist marks her second of the season – tied for the second most on the team.
Craig also contributed to SFA’s stingy defensive effort over the two matches, leading the Ladyjacks to two more shutouts after Friday’s 4-0 victory over Nicholls and Sunday’s 2-0 win against SLU. The two recent clean sheets give SFA a total of five for the year.
Not only did the Ladyjacks keep both Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana off the board, Craig and the rest of the SFA back line only conceded one shot on goal in each game.
The Ladyjacks will next face tough road tests at Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word this weekend, starting with a 7:00 p.m. kick against the second place Wildcats on Friday night. Craig and company will then tangle with UIW on Sunday starting at 1:00 p.m.
