NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The USA Today published its NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball preseason coaches poll on Thursday morning and Stephen F. Austin was one of 24 teams that collected votes in the listing.
In all, the Lumberjacks collected two votes in the poll and are tied for 43rd in the preseason national rankings along with Ohio State and Belmont. It also marks the first appearance for SFA in the poll since it amassed nine votes in the second-to-last listing of the 2014-15 campaign.
Embarking on his third tour of duty as the ‘Jacks head coach, Brad Underwood’s name has been synonymous with success during his short time at the helm of the program. The owner of a 61-8 record, SFA’s bench boss owns the NCAA record for most wins through two seasons as a head coach and was lauded as both the Southland Conference Coach of the Year and the NABC UPS Division I District 23 Coach of the Year in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
Since his installation as the 11th head coach in the history of the program, the ‘Jacks have gone on to achieve unparalleled success by capturing back-to-back Southland Conference regular season and Tournament crowns en route to a pair of NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament appearances.
Armed with a roster which boasts the likes of 2014-15 Southland Conference Player of the Year Thomas Walkup, a pair of other starters including senior guard Trey Pinkney and sophomore guard Ty Charles as well as big-time bench players from a season ago in seniors Clide Geffrard and Demetrious Floyd, the ‘Jacks are poised for more successes in 2015-16.
Hard at work in their third week of official practices, the ‘Jacks begin their 2015-16 slate by taking a journey to Waco on Friday, Nov. 13 to battle in-state adversary Baylor, who checked in as No. 21-ranked team in the land in the preseason poll. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. and the bout will be carried on FOX Sports Southwest Plus.
